Dick Dale, the guitar icon who created a sound that gave him the title “King of Surf Guitar” has died at the age of 81 after a series of health issues.

Dale created the surf rock sound after taking up the sport in the 1950s.  He wanted to create a sound with his guitar that matched the excitement of surfing.

Most of us recognize Dale’s song “Miserlou” from the opening credits of Pulp Fiction but he was influential on music legends like The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen.
