Space travel for those not on NASA’s payroll is becoming closer to reality as Virgin Galactic just took its first passenger into the final frontier.

On board the space tourism company’s supersonic jet last week was astronaut trainer Beth Moses, who was along for the ride with the two pilots as they made their way past the edge of space.

Unity reached an altitude of 51.4 miles during the flight, just beyond the 50-mile marker where most say space begins. When fully ready for commercial operation, Unity can carry six passengers plus the two pilots.

Already 600 future astronauts have dropped $250,000 each for the privilege to become space tourists.
