NASA is calling three new planets, discovered in a nearby system, “missing link” worlds.

The rocky super earth, and two gaseous planets, orbit a star only 73-light-years from our own solar system.

Called TOI-270, the system was found by NASA’s Exoplanet Survey Satellite. “Tess,” for short, was shot into space to scan for planets and stars that could support alien life.

It’s hoped the system will help scientists learn why there are so few planets of similar size and also how the planets in our own system were formed.
