Director Rob Reiner, who on Thursday announced a sequel to “This Is Spinal Tap” is on the way, says there’s a good reason it’s taken nearly 40 years to produce a follow-up to the cult classic: No one had any good ideas for the script.

“I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, ‘Why don’t you do another one?’,” Reiner says. “For so many years, we said, ‘nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.”

The film, which will feature original stars Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer, is expected to premiere on March 19th, 2024 – the 40th anniversary of the original’s release.
